Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese exercise system that relaxes the body calms the mind and lifts the spirit. It is suitable for those who enjoy good health as well as those with health problems. Regular practice is known to build up resistance to illness and alleviate symptoms of many chronic conditions.
This course is designed for learners over 50 who have little or no prior experience of Tai Chi. It is part one of a 3-part course.
No skills, knowlegde or experience is required
Practice a range of relaxing and energising exercises Demonstrate some understanding of the uses and benefits of the exercises taught Practice some classical Tai Chi movements independently Work towards agreed individual goals By the end of the course most learners can practice the complete Small Circle form when working within a group. Many can do so independently and with confidence. Tai Chi is said to relax the body, calm the mind and lift the spirit. Learners report many and varied benefits which they attribute to regular practice. The most common of these are improved ability to cope with stress, and improved mobility and balance.
This course offers an introduction to Tai Chi without pressure to remember a long sequence of movements. The principles of the art are introduced through carefully selected sets of exercises. Classical Tai Chi movements are first learned in their own right and can be adapted to learners' individual needs. Later they are linked in an introduction to the Small Circle form.
No extra practise is required but 10-15 minutes of Tai Chi per day is a good habit to get into.
Each learner will complete a health questionnaire and an initial assessment from which individual targets/challenges will be set. No formal assessment but your progress will be tracked against the course learning outcomes and your personal targets. Self assessment may also be required.
Tutor will advise.
Normal Agewell costs apply. Please wear loose comfortable clothing and flat, flexible soled shoes that do not restrict ankle movement. Books may be recommended but there is no required reading. You may also be informed about Tai Chi events but will be under no obligation to attend. Please also bring water with you.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the ALSS course guide and from teaching or reception staff
