Pilates is a mat-based exercise programme which focuses on posture, body alignment and breathing. Initially the emphasis will be on correct execution of the exercises, understanding 'core stability' and breathing. Movements are slow and controlled to lengthen and strengthen muscles. As the course progresses, the exercises become more demanding and the tutor will advise individuals on alternative ways to perform exercises.
Pilates is a mat-based discipline and is suitable for all individuals who are comfortable exercising on the floor. Pilates may be helpful for those individuals suffering from back pain.
If you are new to Pilates no previous knowledge is necessary to join.
Pilates is an on-going exercise programme and on completion of at least 3 terms it is expected that you will have gained enough knowledge and ability to progress to more advanced level. Show correct alignment in 1 standing and 4 lying positions demonstrate the ability to engage pelvic floor muscles during all exercises Demonstrate core stability in 4 exercises Demonstrate correct movement with breathing in 4 exercises understand and show the principles of relaxing certain muscles whilst working other muscle groups in 4 exercises.
The course is run for one-hour per week for 10-12 weeks. The tutor will revise and move the exercises forward in a structured way week by week. emphasis may be given to exercises for specific conditions should the need arise.
As individuals progress, home exercise is recommended.
Each learner will complete a health questionnaire and an initial assessment from which the tutor will assist you in setting challenging targets for progression within the class. The tutor will assess against the class targets and learners are expected to self assess and reflect on their own progression.
Progression within the class enables learners to stay in the same class for at least two years. Your tutor will advise you on more advanced classes as necessary.
Mats and blocks are provided but you may like to bring a towel to lie on.
We have 3 main ways of supporting learners. a. You may wish to get additional help and guidance offered through the free Study Support Sessions at the Macbeth Centre. At these sessions you can access the internet, work on and print homework and assignments for your course, research, access a range of software, improve your typing and practice/review what you have covered in class. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. b. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. If you have a disability and feel you need support to get the best from your course you can contact Sean Buckley (sean.buckley@lbhf.gov.uk) to have a confidential discussion on how best we can support your learning. c. The Learner Support Fund is a discretionary scheme, funded by the Skills Funding Agency, to assist learners who may be experiencing difficulties in paying for essential equipment/materials, travel costs, childcare, registration fees and other necessary expenses. Details of all available support and how to access it can be found on our website (hfals.ac.uk), in the Guide and the Student handbook, or from teaching or reception staff.
