More about the English and Maths courses
Our English and Maths courses are free for most people and are for people whose first language is English or for people whose first language may not be English, but they have lived in the UK for some years and picked up English informally.
Some learners attend English courses because they may not have done well in school, want to improve their language skills, they want a second chance at learning and achieving qualifications, or just learning for personal development. Whatever your reason for coming, we welcome you to come, learn and achieve together enjoyably.

Here are some things you will develop on our Functional Skills English courses:
- you will develop, and increase your reading and writing
- improve grammar, vocabulary, punctuation ad spelling
- improving speaking and listening in every day, as well as in the workplace through discussions, role plays, question and answer sessions, and presentations.
Here are some things you will develop on our Functional Skills Math courses:
- you will develop your number skills through addition and subtraction
- become better at tables, units, perimeter, percentages, decimals, fractions, money maths, measuring shape and space and handling data
- you will understand charts, graphs and diagrams, weight and measures and averages.
All English and Maths courses offer aspect of Employability and they all lead to qualifications which are well recognised by employers. Courses are available from:
- beginners (Entry1-2)
- lower intermediate (Entry 3)
- upper intermediate (Level 1)
- advanced (Level 2)
Level 2 advanced English and Maths, as well as GCSEs, are accepted by universities, as part of their under-graduate entrance requirements.

Fees for English and Maths
These courses are free to most people: book an interview to find out if your course is free for you. The tutor will also decide whether you are better suited for ESOL courses and refer you accordingly.
Which level is best for you?
We offer courses at different levels – from complete beginners (Entry 1) to advanced (Level 2). All learners must attend an interview before joining the course.
During the interview:
- your level will be assessed by our experienced tutors, and you will be given feedback
- you will be offered a place on a course appropriate for your current level.
