The Alphabet and basic notions of grammatical structure and singular present tense. Greetings, polite phrases and some numbers. Meeting people and exchanging personal information. We aim to build your confidence in speaking.
This course is for complete beginners who wish to gain a strong foundation in both spoken and written modern Arabic.
No knowledge of Arabic is assumed: if you know some already, this course is not for you! You'll need a proficient level of English to benefit from the course.
The Alphabet: recognise and write letters and words • Exchange greetings • Use polite phrases- please, thank you, excuse me • Exchange basic personal information: a) Names, where you are from b) talk about your family… c) Jobs and places of work • order basic food/drinks at a café • Change currency and be familiar with working with ours • Numbers: identify and say numbers 1-10 • give & ask for phone numbers • buying & selling clothes • colours (masculine form) • common locations • • asking for & giving directions • furniture items & prepositions of place • describing places • Basic grammar: a) Nominal sentence and verbal sentence (Singular masculine and feminine) b) Pronouns (Singular Personal, possessives and demonstratives) c) Prepositions, adverbs and adjectives (Singular masculine and feminine)
The emphasis is on active participation. You will speak as much as possible in class, in a large group and individually, you will work in pairs, and use a course book (the tutor will advise), worksheets, handouts, audiotapes. It's important to work hard on your pronunciation right from the start.
You are expected to practice in your spare time (at least 20 minutes a day), and do some homework. Please note: we need to know if you have to be absent for a class so we can make sure you don't miss out!
Every lesson you are given different tasks so that progress can be assessed. Record of your work will be kept in your Individual Learning Plan to help record the steps taken towards achieving your goals.
