What will the course Cover?

The course will consist of eleven sessions: Session 1 24/04/25 Galileo Galilei. Session 2 01/05/25 Catalina de Erauso. Session 3 08/05/25 Johannes Kepler. Session 4 15/05/25 Artemisia Gentileschi. Session 5 22/05/25 Rembrandt. Session 6 05/06/25 Anna Maria van Schurman. Session 7 12/06/25 Christiaan Huygens. Session 8 19/06/25 Henrietta Maria of France. Session 9 26/06/25 Maria Sibylla Merian. Session 10 03/07/25 Louis XIV. Session 11 10/07/25 Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach.

Who is this course for?

Anyone interested in learning about some famous European figures from the 17th century.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

None but your English should be good enough to be able to follow the lectures, participate in class discussions and activities and do some background reading and research.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

demonstrate knowledge of the lives and achievements of these famous figures - recognise how these famous figures influenced Britain and the modern world - be aware of the different types of historical evidence and how they are used

How is the course organised?

11 two-hour long sessions with each one focusing on a famous European figure from the 17th century. Towards the end of the course the tutor and the students will discuss the possibility of a walking tour or museum visit.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Some reading is required in order to complete independent research.

By your contribution in class.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Tutor will advise.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

No other costs. A notebook and a pen to write down notes.
