What will the course Cover?
The course will cover the key skills and knowledge you need to get started on a career teaching adults in Post-16 adult education. The Level 3 Awards are an introduction to teaching that will provide an insight into the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training. The qualification provides an introduction on how to plan and deliver inclusive teaching/training sessions and how to assess and record decisions. The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is a knowledge-based introduction to teaching and/or training which has no teaching practice requirement. The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers/trainers in the further education and training skills sector.
Who is this course for?
This qualification is pre-service or in-service and is aimed at candidates who: would like or require an introduction to teaching / training / tutoring in the Lifelong Learning Sector; are seeking career progression within their area of work; or those who may not currently be teaching, therefore are unable to follow the related higher level teaching qualifications programme.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
To gain entry to this course, you must complete an application form, attend an interview and complete a skills assessment. You must provide evidence of literacy and numeracy skills at level 2, and qualifications and/or substantial experience in the subjects to be taught. No previous experience in teaching adults is necessary; however candidates should be able to demonstrate a commitment to teaching in further, adult or community education. You will also require an appropriate level of IT skills (MS Word, email, internet search etc.) and access to a computer and the internet to successfully complete this course.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
You should be able to adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching / training and tutoring; reflect on your own previous / current levels of experience, practice and skills, and areas for development; identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation; develop communication and inter-personal skills; develop an awareness of your professional role and responsibilities.
How is the course organised?
The course is delivered either in a one term intensive course or over two terms. There are various start dates throughout the year. There is also a micro teaching session of 30 minutes minimum per candidate. The micro teaching sessions take place at the end of the course, generally two full day sessions (depending on class size), which you must attend to gain the qualification.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
To gain the maximum benefit, you should read recommended books and websites, and review the topics covered during the class each week. You should research unit topics, and work on sections of your assignments after each class session. Computer access is available at Study Support sessions at Macbeth centre. Candidates will be expected to undertake additional study in their own time and complete assignments, including weekly Learning Journals. Also, see above for micro teaching information.
How will my progress be assessed?
Portfolio, Feedback and Marked assignments including ongoing self-assessment (Learning Journal). The qualification will be assessed by a combination of written assignments and microteaching.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Upon completion learners may progress into employment as teachers/trainers. Learners will also gain the skills and knowledge required to progress to the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, as well as to the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, the Learning and Development qualifications or the Assessment and Quality Assurance qualifications. Learners may also take complementary qualifications such as a Coaching or Mentoring qualification.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Notepad and pen for notes, a ring binder (for your handouts/research/notes), and materials for assignments. Books from reading list: It is recommended you purchase Anne Gravells’ The Award in Education and Training or Passing Assessments for the Award in Education & Training as your core textbook, and if possible the latest version of Geoff Petty’s Teaching Today as a supplementary text.
What support is available?
