Working with children and adults offers a hugely rewarding career. Every individual is unique, every family different and no day is ever the same. If you are interested in adult care or child care as a career, you want to help your own children or an elderly person and have no previous qualification, professional knowledge or experience, then this course is for you. This qualification allows you to learn the basic skills in caring for children and adults, support their learning and health needs.
This course is aimed at anyone considering a career in health and/or social care with adults or children and young people.
There are no formal entry qualifications but you should be able to demonstrate ability to read and write at English level Entry 3.
You will be able to understand the following: Human growth and Development from Birth to Old Age; Healthy Eating and Living; Health & Safety practices in Home and Group Settings; Orientation to work programme; the range of service provision and roles within health and social care(adults and children); Understand the principles and values in health and social care; Awareness of protection and safeguarding; Communication skills in health and social care. For further information you can find detailed guides on the CACHE website at www.cache.org.uk
Classroom teaching; One-to-one tutorials as required; Research activities.
Homework will be set by your tutor and assignments as set by CACHE will need to be researched and submitted by deadline dates as set by the tutor. You will need to attend placements regularly (if applicable). Set aside minimum 4 hours a week for study and assignments.
A portfolio task has to be completed for all of the units. The portfolio tasks are set by CACHE and internally marked. You will also keep and update an Individual Learning Plan.
Learners will be able to progress on to the Certificate and Diploma level of the qualification later in the academic year. The following year you can progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care or the Level 2 Certi¿cate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce.
All assessment and registration costs are included in the course fee. You are expected to have a current CRB certificate.
There will be tutorials for each student per term. Relevant books will be given to you and periodicals may be available from your local Library Service. You may wish to get additional help and guidance offered through the free Study Support Sessions at the Macbeth Centre. At these sessions you can access the internet, work on and print homework and assignments for your course, research, access a range of software, improve your typing and practice/review what you have covered in class. You will need to book a place on these sessions – ask your tutor how. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. If you have a disability and feel you need support to get the best from your course you can contact Sean Buckley (sean.buckley@lbhf.gov.uk) to have a confidential discussion on how best we can support your learning. The Learner Support Fund is a discretionary scheme, funded by the Skills Funding Agency, to assist learners who may be experiencing difficulties in paying for essential equipment/materials, travel costs, childcare, registration fees and other necessary expenses. These funds are only available to learners studying towards an approved qualification and who are on a low household income of under £20,000. Parental income will not be taken into consideration but the income of any spouse or partner will. Proof of low income will be required. Please discuss this with your tutor at interview or enquire at reception for full details of these funds. Details of all available support can be found on our website (hfals.ac.uk), in the Guide and the Student handbook, or from teaching or reception staff.
