You will be guided through each step of the process of creating a simple upholstered item, from start to finish. Using a footstool frame you will construct an upholstered, padded top You will be introduced to the specialist tools, techniques and materials used in traditional and modern upholstery. These will include using a magnetic hammer, tacking, webbing a frame and cutting materials. Health and Safety induction procedures related to working in the upholstery workshop will also be covered during the course sessions.
For those who are interested in gaining practical skills and techniques in upholstery.
No prior experience needed but it would be an advantage if you have worked with craft or art materials either on a course or in your own time. A basic literacy and numeracy level is required.
• Calculate amounts of materials required for a specific project. • Prepare and cut accurately a range of modern and traditional upholstery materials. • Identify and use correctly the tools and materials required to complete a simple upholstery project. • Complete a simple finished upholstery project. • Identify Health and Safety procedures relating to working with upholstery tools and equipment.
This is a practical course in the upholstery workshop, where there will be inductions to specialist equipment. You will be taught in a group and through individual tutoring. There will be tutor demonstrations of techniques, presentations and group discussions. You will be assessed at the end of the course, by submitting documentation of the work you have produced.
Keep a sketchbook, take photos, produce written notes. Research in libraries and internet.
One to one and group feedback. Observation and assessment of designs and practical work in progress. Group discussions and feedback will take place to evaluate work in progress and when it is completed. An individual learning plan will be used to track progress. A project record with written and photographic record will also be used. Use of sketchbooks will be encouraged and used as a record and means of assessment.
After completing this course, you could progress to a Level 1 Award in Creative Craft qualification in Creative Craft including Stained Glass, Jewellery, Ceramics or Upholstery.
Basic resources will be supplied – including fabric, a specialist upholstery material and frames. A notepad / sketchbook, pen and a camera. Wear sturdy shoes in the workshop.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
