This course is aimed at students with little or no previous experience of upholstery and provides a supportive learning environment for the development and practice of skills. The course will cover the use of hand tools, Health & Safety, and basic upholstery. You will be encouraged to work on a drop-in seat or dining chair as your first project which should be brought to the first class. Please note: to avoid disappointment any large items may only be accommodated following discussion with the tutor contact Jane Sutton for details.
Beginners to upholstery.
No previous experience required
Upholster a drop in seat or similar Identify 4 tools and 5 materials used in upholstery. Apply Health and Safety procedures in an upholstery workshop. Set up and use a domestic sewing machine correctly. Measure and record sizes using the metric system. Mark out fabric accurately. Cut fabric accurately. Use loose stuffing to achieve a desired shape. Identify 4 upholstery fabrics. Identify 3 types of twine and specify their uses. Handle fabrics with necessary care. List the correct care for tools and equipment. Identify 4 trimming types. Write a costing sheet. Evaluate projects completed.
Practical workshop with demonstrations. Individual and group work. Question and answer sessions.
Keeping workshop learning journals up to date with written notes, photos and diagrams. Providing material for projects. Visits to furniture/fabric retailers. Visits to furniture/fabric retailers.
Feedback from your tutor on project work and progress recorded on your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.
Higher level upholstery classes to develop your skills further
You will need to bring your own piece of furniture and pay for all the materials used. Some tools are provided for use in class. You will also need: Your own top fabric and trimmings. A notepad and pen. A camera. Stout shoes. Please note: Any items brought onto the premises and/or worked on in class are done so at the owners’ own risk.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
