You will work on a stained glass panel during which time a range of skills will be taught including: designing cartooning, glass cutting, leading, and soldering. It will also be to possible to explore kiln-fired glass painting techniques, sand blasting and glass fusing.
Students who would like to explore the medium of stained glass and develop their art, craft and design skills.
No prior experience, but practical abilities are required.
• Demonstrate an understanding of safe studio/workshop practice. • Identify and use 5 specialist items of stained glass tools and equipment safely. • Translate a simple design or image into an accurate leaded glass pattern. • Select and use basic materials including glass and lead came, appropriate to a design/pattern. • Cut glass, cut lead, and assemble a small stained glass item. • Those with more experience may be able to sandblast glass to produce a greater variety of surface textures.
There will be practical demonstrations, formal instruction, practice and individual tuition. Occasional illustrated lectures will cover historical and contemporaray stained glass.
Design work, library and internet research, sketchbook drawings and some practical work such as finishing. Visits to museums and places that contain examples of stained glass are recommended to increase your knowledge.
Progress is assessed through discussing the work individually and in groups and recorded on your Individual Learning Plans/Journals.
Produce work of a high standard that could contribute to a portfolio for submission to enter FE/HE or possibly take commissions for stained glass.
You will need to purchase your own glass, lead and solder for your project - your tutor will advise you on the first session. We have tools and equipment and some sample materials available for use. Open footwear (e.g. sandals) should not be worn during sessions.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Tim Cunliffe teaches stained glass besides drawing and mixed media courses at the Macbeth Centre. He is an artist who has been working in the media of stained glass, sculpture and drawing for over thirty years. He trained as a sculptor at Canterbury College of Art on the BA Fine Art course from 1980-83. From 1988, he attended the Post Graduate Diploma in Stained Glass course at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art where he was taught by Amal Ghosh. He was awarded the Caroline Swash Stained Glass Fellowship in 1990. Throughout his career Tim has carried out many commissions in glass and taken part in numerous exhibitions both in the UK and internationally. He has exhibited as a member of the contemporary glass artists’ group New London Glass since 2001. His sculptural work includes cast bronze reliefs and unique fine art pieces in glass that he combines with other materials such as wood and metal. The British Museum acquired one of his bronze art medals in 2002. In 2018 he was commissioned to create a stained glass panel to illustrate the front cover of the UK based magazine, Shortlist.
