This course will cover a range of essential skills and techniques for beginners. You will start with an introduction to the sewing machine, specifically the Bernina model, where you will learn how to thread and use it, along with basic sewing techniques. The tutor will guide you through dressmaking terminology and how to take accurate measurements. You will also learn basic garment techniques, including open and closed seams, inserting zippers, sewing buttons with buttonholes, and creating elasticated waistbands. By the end of the course, you will be able to confidently construct a basic item of clothing following commercial pattern instructions. Additionally, you will need to follow the tutor's instructions on health and safety procedures and learn how to use sewing equipment safely. Depending on your pace, you may produce one or more basic garments throughout the course.
This is a beginner’s course, for anyone with an interest in clothes making/ fashion, all are welcome, suitable for people with limited or no previous experience.
None but a general interest in fashion/clothes making would be useful. Students must be able to speak, read and write in English and have basic numeracy skills. You will need to engage with guidance and essential health and safety information, which is provided in different formats (verbal, written, and visual). You will be encouraged to take notes and part in peer discussions, though we welcome different forms of participation. We are committed to accommodating diverse learning needs ---please inform us of any specific requirements when enrolling.
Thread and use a domestic sewing machine safely and accurately. Construct a basic garment: assembling simple garments like skirts, top or elasticated waist trousers, including inserting zippers and attaching waistbands. Demonstrate the ability to apply Health and Safety procedure in the sewing room.
Through practical demonstrations, one-to-one support. Participation in group discussions and feedback are encouraged.
Additional / extension tasks may be set for you to complete at home and outside of the course hours. Completion of additional tasks is encouraged to help you get the most out of the course. Where required your tutor will discuss these with you during each session.
Continuous assessment will occur in class and the Individual Learning Plan will be used to monitor progress and give feedback between learner and tutor.
You could enrol on Clothes Making - intermediate courses to develop your skills. You may also want to consider courses in hand and machine stitch embroidery.
Please bring a basic sewing kit and an A4 ringbinder, paper and pen to the first class. Fabrics and patterns to be advised by the tutor.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Course Guide or from teaching or reception staff.
