Start or further develop your skills in furniture restoration. While working on your own furniture, learn how to cope with the different problems that can occur, from patching missing wood, mouldings and parts, to colouring, finishing/refinishing and final waxing. Please bring your project to the first class.
The course is designed for learners who would like to learn skills employed in the restoration of furniture. You will bring items of furniture (size restricted), which require some form of restoration - damaged finish, scratch scuffs, missing veneer, broken legs and loose joints.
No previous experience required.
Demonstrate the ability to apply Health and Safety procedures in a work shop. Identify and repair 2 types of finish. Identify 3 types of wood stain. Recognise 3 different woods used in furniture construction. Identify 3 historical periods for furniture. Identify 5 specialist restoration hand tools. Assess damage to furniture. Write a restoration plan. Restore own project. Evaluate restoration techniques used.
One to one, group, demonstrations, project work. Question and answer sessions.
Minor fact finding, purchasing of specialist materials and equipment
Individual assessment of restoration work and feed back from tutor. our progress will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.
Projects which require alternative skills or a higher level of the same skills, discuss with your tutor to see if your next project is appropriate.

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
