What will the course Cover?

This Saturday workshop is designed to give people the opportunity to learn woodworking and restoration skills. If you are a beginner you will acquire basic woodwork skills and techniques before embarking on your own personal project. More experienced students can extend their knowledge and skills whilst working on a project from the start. Using a variety of joints and construction methods, hand and power tools and machines, you will produce and execute your own design. Use of machines is at the discretion of the lecturer and is dependent on the students’ experience.

Who is this course for?

People who have an interest in woodwork and restoration. This is aimed at people with some experience with a project to develop. Beginners welcome along with a project they wish to develop.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

No previous skills required, ability to follow verbal instructions.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Identify and select woodworking hand tools. Apply Health and Safety proceedures in a woodwork/restoration workshop. Use hand and power tools safely and competently. Effectively sharpen chisels and planes. Produce basic technical drawings. Identify a selection of hard and soft woods. Mark out and cut joints. Construct a halving joint. Construct a housing joint. Construct a mortice and tenon joint. Assess damage Identify and repair 2 types of finish. Identify 3 types of wood stain. Identify method for French Polishing Identify how to replace veneer (matching & patching) Other skills (where appropriate) will be covered depending on the requirements of your project.

How is the course organised?

Group and individual demonstration and instruction, discussion, project work, set exercises, question and answer sessions.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Study of handouts. Project idea development, preparation of project drawings and sourcing of materials.

How will my progress be assessed?

Feed back from tutor on project work and progress. Through the use of your own Learning Journal and Individual Learning Plan.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Higher level woodwork eg C&G building construction, cabinet making course or other related woodwork courses - e.g. restoration or picture framing.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Cost of materials for personal project. Pencil and paper. Apron if desired. Older clothes. Stout shoes. Please note: Any items brought onto the premises and/or worked on in class are done so at the owners’ own risk.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
