What will the course Cover?
You will learn about different genres in the publishing world and study the styles of well-known illustrators. Reading short narratives, you will learn how to research a brief, plan and design a page, create rough sketches, and prepare final art. We will focus on technique and learning to illustrate characters in motion with interesting settings, along with an emphasis on page design and composition.
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for anyone who would like to learn illustration techniques that are practiced in the world of publishing and commercial illustration.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
Some experience of drawing and illustration is an advantage, but beginners are very welcome.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
• Read and interpret text. • Plan a story board. • Learn to animate a character. • Learn about sequencing. • Learn to show facial expression and character consistency. • Create rough sketches. • Learn about design and composition. • Learn Illustration techniques such as: pen & ink, water colour, and coloured pencil. • Create finished art. • Create a final booklet that is based on a provided brief.
How is the course organised?
Each week you will learn an illustration technique and illustrate a short brief. The tutor will show you examples of work done in this medium and will demonstrate how to use the various techniques. At the end of each class, you will be given the next brief and asked to gather reference for the following project. You will be encouraged to keep a sketch book with your reference and drawings.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Continued drawing in a sketchbook and trying different techniques at home.
How will my progress be assessed?
One to one verbal feedback, group discussion and evaluation, progress reported on ILP. The classroom assignments will be good examples of your understanding of briefs and your ability to depict what has been asked of you.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Further study at more advanced level in this subject to develop technique. Portfolio Preparation courses, Foundation courses in FE/HE. Approaching art directors and finding work as an illustrator.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Bring pencils to the first session. You will need to bring a sketchbook. Basic paper and art supplies are available but be advised by the tutor for best sources to purchase any other materials.

Trisha Krauss is a published children's book illustrator and all round creative. Trisha also has lots of knowledge about selling work and getting publish. Her rich use of patterns in her illustrations have led to a career in textile design.
