This course focuses on developing a variety of approaches to block printing. Using heat-fixed textile pigment and block printing inks, you will experiment with colour layering and printing pattern. Confidence with colour mixing and printing techniques will be developed using a variety of papers and fabrics. You will create multi-coloured prints using reduction techniques and puzzle blocks. The process of screen-printing using cut paper techniques, will be introduced. You will collect and manipulate visual references in your a sketchbook to develop ideas for printing.
This course is for suitable for those with an interest in using a lino block technique to expand their approach to creating a printed pattern and design. It is ideal if you want to experiment with layering colour and combining a range of techniques to produce printed outcomes.
Experience of cutting lino to create a simple block for printing, however the tutor can give guidance if you are new to this process.
• Create a series of printed samples on paper and fabric. • Print with colour using multi-block printing methods. • Use colour mixing and layering techniques to explore pattern. • Use of a sketch book to research and develop ideas for a print or series of prints.
This is a practical course in a studio environment. You will be taught in a group and through individual tutoring. There will be tutor demonstrations, presentations and group discussions.
To get the most out of the course, you will be encouraged to gather visual references and explore potential ideas within your sketchbook.
You will receive feedback in discussions with the tutor and in a group with your peers. Progress is recorded on an Individual Learning Plan.
To continue developing your creative skills, there are a range of visual art courses at the MacBeth Centre to enrol onto, including Children’s Book Illustration, Life Drawing, Portraiture and Watercolour Painting.
Basic supplies such as pigment, paper for stencils, cutting tools and masking tape are provided. Please bring a sketchbook or notebook, pencils and a small paint brush. At the first session, the tutor will give advice on additional materials you will need to purchase, including lino blocks, paper and fabric, at the first session.
