This course introduces the basic techniques of block printing. You will learn how to make your own lino blocks and create basic repeat patterns. By experimenting with various hand painting and block printing techniques, you will gain the confidence to explore the possibilities this versatile and dynamic process. Using heat-fixed textile pigment and block printing inks, you will explore to the possibilities of colour to print onto a variety of papers and fabrics. Throughout the course, you will build a library of blocks to use for printing. You will collect and organise imagery in a sketchbook to use as visual reference.
This course is for anyone who would like a practical introduction to creating blocks to use for printing. It is ideal for those new to mixing and layering colour within a pattern.
This is a beginner level course. No previous knowledge is necessary.
• Design and carve lino to create a block for printing. • Print on paper or fabric to produce a design or repeat pattern. • Produce a range of samples using basic blocks to construct a pattern or image. • Mix and layer colours using heat set fabric paint and printing ink.
This is a practical course in a studio environment. You will be taught in a group and through individual tutoring. There will be tutor demonstrations of techniques, presentations and group discussions.
To get the most out of the course, you will be encouraged to collect visuals for inspiration and plan ideas in your sketchbook.

Block Printing with Lino 2, to continue developing your printing techniques or further courses in the arts and crafts area at the MacBeth Centre, including Children’s Book Illustration, Drawing and Painting or Watercolour Painting Studio.
Basic supplies such as pigment, cutting tools and masking tape are provided. Please bring a sketchbook or notebook, pencils and a small paint brush. The tutor will give advice on additional materials you will need to purchase, including lino blocks, paper and fabric, at the first session. Please bring your own apron or other protective clothing.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Trisha Krauss is a published children's book illustrator and all round creative. Trisha also has lots of knowledge about selling work and getting publish. Her rich use of patterns in her illustrations have led to a career in textile design.
